You can customize a Windows Imaging Format (WIM) file before you deploy Windows Vista, and then upgrade to Windows Vista by using the customized WIM file. However, the upgrade process stops when you use the customized WIM file.

In Windows Vista, when you try to remove more than two images from a .wim file that contains four images, you may receive the following error message:

Error opening file [image_file]
The data is invalid.

Note: In this error message, image_file represents the name and location of the .wim file.

When you try to create a Windows Vista-based Windows Imaging Format (WIM) build in Microsoft Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD), you may receive the following error message:

Error during wizard processing
An unexpected error occurred while processing the wizard results.
Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute.

You cannot create the WIM build.

This problem occurs if you have added components such as a hotfix or an update to the WIM image file.

You use a Windows Vista-based computer to generate a Windows Imaging Format (.wim) file that contains more than 30 images. When you use an Unattend.xml file to install Windows Vista through the .wim file, the installation fails. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Windows could not calculate how much space is required for installation.

You use the Ximage.exe tool to mount a Microsoft Windows Imaging Format (WIM) file for read and write access in Windows Vista. Then, you try to delete this file by using Microsoft Windows Explorer. However, you cannot delete this file, and you receive the following error message:

Cannot delete filename: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is currently not in use.

Note: When this problem occurs, you can still mount or modify a WIM file by using the Ximage.exe tool.

When you try to use the move command to move a file to or from a folder in a Microsoft Windows Imaging Format (WIM) image file, you may receive the following error message:

The request is not supported

When you use the System Preparation tool (Sysprep.exe) in audit mode to deploy a Windows Vista Windows Image Format (WIM) image file, the Out of Box Experience (OOBE) Wizard does not run automatically. Instead, the OOBE Wizard is displayed as a System Cleanup Action option in a dialog box. This symptom occurs even though the Windows System Image Manager identifies the OOBE Wizard value as a default value for the auditUser mode or for the auditSystem mode.
