Power management may not work correctly on a Windows Vista-based portable computer that has a Windows SideShow-compatible USB device attached. Because of this problem, the CPU may not correctly enter a reduced power-consumption state. In a reduced power-consumption state, the processor is supposed to conserve battery power. The processor does this by using reduced voltage or reduced frequency states. When this problem occurs, the battery may drain more quickly than you expect.

Consider the following scenario. On a Windows Vista-based computer that includes a Windows SideShow-compatible device, you change the device settings in Control Panel. For example, you open the Windows SideShow item in Control Panel, and then you open the Change Device Settings window. Then, you perform one of the following actions:
- You restart the Windows SideShow-compatible device, and then you immediately open the Change Device Settings window.
- You restart the computer, and then you immediately open the Change Device Settings window.
- You make a change to the language settings in the Change Device Settings window. You close the Change Device Settings window, and then you immediately reopen this window.
Note: The device automatically restarts after a change is made to the language settings in the Change Device Settings window.
In this scenario, the settings in the Change Device Settings window appear to be incorrect. The device settings appear to have reverted to the original settings.

When a User-Mode Driver Framework (UMDF) driver that uses the Windows SideShow class extension processes a command asynchronously, the class extension may return a false error without fully processing the command. This problem may occur if the incoming input/output control (IOCTL) is not passed to the class extension component immediately or when the IOCTL is from a sequential queue.
