When you perform an unattended installation of Windows Vista, you may find that the “[servicing]” section of the automatically detected unattended-answer file (Autounattend.xml) is not processed.

The “[servicing]” section contains instructions to install language packs, hotfixes, or other packages. The unattended-answer file is automatically detected by Windows Setup because this file is located in one of several valid search locations for unattended-answer files. Because of this problem, the installation of language packs, hotfixes, or other packages fails silently.

This problem does not occur if the Autounattend.xml answer file is explicitly specified by using the /unattend switch.

  • The version of Windows Vista that you want to install does not include the Media Center component.
  • In an unattended XML file, you specify use of the ShowMediaCenter child element to hide the Media Center component in the WindowsFeatures element.

In this scenario, the installation of Windows Vista fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file [C:\windows\Panther\unattend.xml] for pass [oobesystem]. The settings specified in the answer file cannot be applied. The error was detected while processing settings for component [Microsoft - Windows - Shell -Setup]

You perform an unattended setup of an Arabic or Hebrew version of Windows Vista by using an Unattend.xml file. In the Unattend.xml file, you use the RunSynchronous or RunAsynchronous command together with the option to display the command description during the auditUser pass. In this case, the graphical user interface (GUI) window that displays the description for each command is blank. When the same Unattend.xml file is used together with the English version of Windows Vista during the auditUser pass, the descriptions are displayed correctly.
