On a Windows Vista-based Tablet PC that has Microsoft Office Outlook installed, the Windows Search Indexer crashes. When this issue occurs, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Windows Search Indexer stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available.

When the Windows Search Indexer crashes, you cannot search in Outlook. In this situation, you must restart both the Windows Search Indexer and Outlook.

Consider the following scenario:

  • You are running a Windows Vista-based computer.
  • You use Windows Desktop Search (WDS) or Instant Search to perform a search on some traditional Chinese characters.

In this scenario, documents that are known to contain the traditional Chinese characters are not returned in the search results.

For example, when you perform a search by using a person’s full name in WDS or in Instant Search, documents that contain the name are returned in the search results. However, when you perform a search by using the person’s first name, no documents are returned.

In Windows Server 2008 and in Windows Vista, the Do not search files user policy setting does not work as expected. After you enable the Do not search files policy setting, you can still search for files by using the Start Search box on the Start menu.

However, you cannot use the Start Search box on the Start menu to search for files when you enable the Do not search for files policy setting on the Taskbar and Start Menu item in Control Panel.
