KB953155

UpdatesDescription: This update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Windows Internet Printing Service that could allow remote code execution in the context of the current user. If a user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. The security update addresses this vulnerability by changing the way that memory is allocated within the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) service. Keep reading →

When you print on Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computers that have hyper threading technology, the print process exits unexpectedly (crashes) under heavy stress.

Note: This issue occurs mainly on multiprocessor computers and on multicore computers.

Consider the following scenario:

  1. An application uses GDI+ to print images to a color printer in one of the following Microsoft operating systems:
    • Windows Server 2003
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows Server 2008
  2. The printer uses an Image Color Matching (ICM) color profile for color matching.

In this scenario, the color profile is not applied to the output. This may cause the colors of the image that is printed to differ from your expectations.

Note: This problem does not occur on Windows XP-based computers.

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008.
  • You have an XML Paper Specification (XPS) printer driver for an XPS printer installed on the computer.
  • You use the XPS printer to print a document that contains some large and complex graphics.

In this scenario, it takes much longer than expected to print the document. For example, it may take more than an hour to print an image from a graphics processing application. Additionally, the graphics processing application remains unresponsive for about 10 minutes. (In this situation, the mouse pointer is displayed as an hourglass.)

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Windows Server 2008-based print server.
  • This print server has many Windows Vista-based printer clients.

In this scenario, the memory usage of the Print Spooler service increases over time. For example, assume that you have several thousand printer clients that connect to the print server. Eventually, the print server becomes unresponsive, and you must restart the server to recover from this problem.

You have a PostScript printer driver that is installed on a computer that is running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008. In an application, you try to print a document to the PostScript printer, or you print the document to a file through the PostScript printer driver. However, the application may exit unexpectedly (crash) when the content is converting to a PostScript (.ps) file.

The following applications are known to experience the crash:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Power Point
  • Adobe applications such as Adobe Frame Maker 8.0

Under certain circumstances, some sections in a document may be lost. For example, you have a document that contains section 1, section 2, and section 3. After you convert the document to a .ps file, and then you convert the .ps file to a Portable Document Format (PDF) file, section 2 is lost.

Note: In this example, both section 1 and section 3 are in font A, although section 2 is in font B.

When a print job is printed successfully on a Windows Vista-based computer or on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer, the “Print Complete” sound is not played.

Note: The “Print Complete” sound is specified in the Sound Control Panel item.

KB948349

Consider the following scenario:

  • On a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you use a printer that uses Printer Control Language (PCL) version 6 to print multiple copies of a multipage document.
  • You click to select the Collate check box in a print application in Microsoft Office Excel 2003 or in Microsoft Office Excel 2007.

In this scenario, the print process does not work correctly. Additionally, you may receive the following error message after you print the first copy of the document:

PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNAL
Error: IllegalOperatorSequence
Operator: Endchar
Position: Number

Note: This issue also occurs when you print a multipage Word 2003 or Word 2007 document after you click to clear the Enable advanced printing features check box for the printer.

On a Windows Vista-based computer, an XML Paper Specification (XPS) printer driver is installed for an XPS printer. However, when you use the XPS printer to print an XPS document, the XPS document is not correctly printed.

This problem is more likely to occur when the XPS printer driver does not include any filters.
