Media Transfer Protocol: A Microsoft-devised set of custom extensions to the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) that is built-in on Vista. Whereas PTP was designed for downloading photographs from digital cameras, Media Transfer Protocol supports the transfer of music files on digital audio players and movie files on portable media players.

In Microsoft Windows Media Player 11, you transfer media to a portable device. For example, you transfer music files. When you cancel the transfer process, Windows Media Player 11 stops responding (hangs).

This problem occurs when the device uses the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP).

On a Windows Vista-based computer, when you connect a Media Transfer Protocol-capable (MTP-capable) device, Windows Media Player cannot synchronize media to the device.
