KB956115

August 30th, 2008 · No Comments · 130 views

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1.
  • The computer has a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express interface.
  • You have at least one PCI Express card that does not fully support Active State Power Management (ASPM) inserted.
  • You restart the computer.

In this scenario, an internal error may occur during restart. For example, a CPU IERR error may occur. Additionally, the system may stop responding.

This problem occurs approximately one time in every 500 restarts. Therefore, you usually experience this issue only when you are running restart tests. However, the risk of this problem occurring increases significantly if the following conditions are true:

  • You apply hotfix 952681 on the computer.
  • You insert PCI Express cards that do not fully support ASPM into all available PCI Express slots.

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • The computer has the User Account Control (UAC) and Internet Explorer 7 protected mode enabled.

In this scenario, Internet Explorer 7 may stop responding when you try to visit any Web site. When this problem occurs, a blank Internet Explorer window appears, and the pointer circles constantly. To escape this condition, you must end the Internet Explorer process (Iexplore.exe) in Task Manager. Or, you must restart the computer.

Notes

  • Typically, this problem occurs the first time that you start Internet Explorer after the computer starts or when the computer resumes from sleep or suspend mode.
  • Sometimes, the Internet Explorer does not start when you double-click the Internet Explorer icon.

Symptom 1

Consider the following scenario:

  • On a computer that is running the release version of Windows Vista, a volume on the hard disk is corrupted.
  • You restart the computer.

In this scenario, a black screen is displayed, and you cannot log on to the computer except in safe mode.

Symptom 2

Consider the following scenario:

  • On a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008, a volume on the hard disk is corrupted.
  • You restart the computer.

In this scenario, the Autochk.exe application stops responding, and this prevents the restart process from continuing. If you press a key to cancel the Autochk.exe process, you can log on to the computer as expected.

Note: By default, the Autochk.exe application automatically tries to fix any hard disk corruption during startup. After Autochk.exe fixes the disk corruption, the system automatically restarts.
