A fax application or the Windows Fax and Scan application may randomly crash when you try to send or receive fax documents on a Windows Server 2008-based or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer.

When this problem occurs, you may find an event in the Application event log that resembles the following event:

Faulting application WFS.exe or [application name], version [version number], time stamp [time stamp], faulting module WFS.exe or [application name], version [version number], time stamp [time stamp], exception code 0xc0000094, fault offset [offset], process id [process ID], application start time [start time].

When you install a Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) scanner on a Windows Vista SP1-based computer, and then you try to import an image from the scanner by using “Windows Fax and Scan” or by using Windows Photo Gallery, you receive the following error message:

A problem prevented the document from being scanned. Please try again, or for troubleshooting information, see Help and Support of the information that came with the scanner.

When you try to send a facsimile (fax) from Windows Vista, you receive the following error message:

There was an error sending the fax.

This can be possibly because you are trying to send the fax with delivery receipts which are not supported by the server. Please try sending without receipts.

Consider the following scenario:

• You are running the Simplified Chinese version of Windows Vista.
• You try to send a fax by using a built-in Fax Cover Page template in Windows Fax and Scan.

In this scenario, the Chinese characters on the cover page may appear as squares.

In Windows Vista, you open a saved fax from the Drafts folder in Windows Fax and Scan, and you try to send it. However, the fax may not be submitted to the Outbox, and the fax is never sent and is lost.

When you try to use Windows Fax and Scan to send or receive a fax in Windows Vista, the transmission may not finish after a connection is established.

When you try to use the Windows Fax and Scan feature to send a fax in Windows Vista, you cannot send the fax. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

The message could not be sent. An error has occurred.

This problem occurs when the fax contains a compressed file with a .zip file name extension as an attachment.

When you try to submit a fax to a fax server by using Windows Fax and Scan on a Windows Vista-based computer, the fax submission fails. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:

This media is write protected

In Windows Vista, you configure Windows Fax and Scan to automatically route incoming faxes to a printer. Then, Windows Fax and Scan becomes unresponsive.

This problem occurs when the printer requires input from the user. For example, the printer may require that you input the name of the file that is to be printed.

You click Send after you attach an XML Paper Specification (.xps) document to a fax message in the Windows Fax and Scan program in Windows Vista. Then, you receive the following error message:

Windows can’t fax or preview the attached file type. Try installing a program that allows you to print .tif files, save the attached file as a .tif file, and then try again.
