The Media Foundation Protected Media Path executable runs within a Protected Environment (PE) when media content has DRM restrictions. This executable, mfpmp.exe, has an extensibility model for 3rd-party Media Foundation components.
The Audio Device Graph Isolation executable always runs in a PE to protect any audio content that may require DRM. The audiodg.exe binary also has an extensibility model for 3rd-party user-mode components such as Audio Processing Objects.
These components, as well as user-mode audio and video drivers, will only load into a PE if signed properly for the environment. Signing is implemented through WHQL where tied to hardware through the submission process, or using the licensed PE SDK for drivers not passing through WHQL and for other components. The PE SDK provides instructions for signing binaries through the use of catalog files.
Two issues have been identified in the use of catalog signing:
- The catalog entries in the catalog database are not persisted through an operating system upgrade. The effect is that PE-signed components will no longer load into a PE after upgrade.
- Performing a rollback of a PE component upgrade does not reliably replace the newer entry in the catalog database with the pre-upgrade catalog. The effect is again that the components signed by the catalog will no longer load into a PE.

On a Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computer, you perform a Digital Rights Management (DRM) test. If you select the Balanced power option when you configure the test, you can pass the test as expected. However, if you select the Power saver power option, you receive a message that resembles the following message:
Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format (S/PDIF) Support.
In this case, you can pass the test only after you connect some audio device to the line in port or to the line out port.

Consider the following scenario:
- You are running a Windows Vista-based computer.
- You try to play Digital Rights Management (DRM)-protected content in a hosted HTML application.
In this scenario, you may receive the following message:
Security Upgrade Required
The owner of the protected content you are trying to access requires you to first upgrade some of the Microsoft digital rights management (DRM) components on your computer.
Click OK to upgrade your DRM components.
If you click OK, Windows Media Center starts the security upgrade process. However, the upgrade process may never move on to next page as expected. Additionally, the pointer remains in a busy state during the upgrade process.
When this problem occurs, a 0xc00d277e error code is logged in the IndivlastHR registry entry. For more information about this registry entry, see the “The IndivlastHR registry entry” section.
