A black screen is displayed after you enter your user credentials in the logon dialog box on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. When this issue occurs, you can still move the mouse pointer. However, you cannot start applications such as Windows Explorer. After a while, the operating system stops responding.

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Vista Service Pack 1.
  • You have other computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • Both of computers are in a same workgroup.

In this scenario, the Credentials Manager (CredMan) service does not save credentials when you try to map a drive by using a net use command together with the /savecred option.

Note: This behavior differs from Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP.

Consider the following scenario:

  1. From a Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based or Windows Server 2008-based Remote Desktop Connection 6.1 client, you connect to remote computers or to Terminal Services RemoteApp (TS RemoteApp) applications through a Terminal Server (TS) Gateway server.
  2. You select the Remember my password option to save the user credentials when you connect to the TS Gateway server.

In this case, if there is a network outage that prevents the connection to the TS Gateway server, you may encounter the Enter your credentials prompt dialog box when you try to re-connect to the TS Gateway server after the network connection is restored. Therefore, you have to enter the user credentials again.

On a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, assume that you enable the single sign-on (SSO) service for 802.1X authentication. In this scenario, all the other non-SSO credential providers are disabled. Therefore, you may be unable to authenticate by using some credential providers that are provided by Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), such as fingerprint authentication.

KB963047

February 26th, 2009 · No Comments · 501 views

Consider the following scenario:

  • On a Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) site, you set the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) setting for client certificates to Accept client certificates.
  • On a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you run the Add Network Location Wizard or the Map Network Drive Wizard to add this WebDAV site.
  • After you finish running the wizard, the Select Certificate dialog box appears. In the Select Certificate dialog box, you click Cancel.

In this scenario, you expect to obtain an instant connection to the WebDAV site or to receive a dialog box that requests the user’s credentials. However, after you apply hotfix KB954809, you are prompted two times for user credentials. The second prompt may indicate that the input is invalid and has to be corrected at the next try.

Additionally, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred:
“The file cannot be accessed by the system.”

Notes:

  • When the SSL setting for client certificates is set to Accept client certificates, you expect that the user can provide a certificate or credentials to access the WebDAV site.
  • This problem does not occur on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.

KB956943

October 25th, 2008 · No Comments · 1,066 views

Consider the following scenario:

  • On a Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computer, you configure a proxy server in Windows Internet Explorer.
  • You use the Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDav) protocol to access a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server site.

In this scenario, you are prompted unexpectedly to enter your credentials three times. However, you expect that you can access the site directly.

For example, you are prompted to enter your credentials three times when the following conditions are true:

  • You open a Microsoft Office file from a SharePoint Server site.
  • To open the file, you use a 2007 Microsoft Office system program on a Windows Vista-based client computer that has a proxy server configured.

Note: This problem does not occur on a Windows XP-based computer.

When you attempt to install Adobe After Effects CS4 on Windows Vista 64, the installation fails and displays the following dialog box:

“Invalid User Credentials. You do not have sufficient security credentials to install Adobe After Effects CS4.”

You are not prompted to authenticate with an administrator account, and using Run as Administrator gives the same results.

When you use the Remote Desktop Client to connect to a Microsoft Windows 2000 Terminal Server from Window Vista or from Windows Server 2008, the automatic authentication fails, and you are prompted two times for the credentials.

This does not occur when you connect to a Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server.
