Consider the following scenario:

  • On a Windows Vista-based computer, an application uses the IShellFolder interface and the IContextMenu interface to retrieve the shortcut menu for a removable media drive.
  • There is a disc in the removable media drive.
  • The application retrieves the menu after the system starts from a power-off (S5) state.

In this scenario, the Play and AutoPlay items do not appear on the shortcut menu that the application retrieves.

When you insert a DVD-VR-formatted disc into the DVD drive on a Windows Vista-based computer, a Windows Explorer window appears instead of the AutoPlay dialog box. Therefore, the DVD does not play automatically as expected.

Consider the following scenario:

  • You connect a removable storage device to a Windows Vista-based computer.
  • This storage device has a DCIM folder in its root directory.
  • This storage device has an Autorun.inf file in its root directory.

In this scenario, a Windows Explorer window appears instead of the AutoPlay dialog box. Therefore, you cannot start the program that is configured in the Autorun.inf file.

If this storage device has a DCIM folder in its root directory but does not have an Autorun.inf file in its root directory, options for viewing pictures appear in an AutoRun dialog box. Therefore, you can select the program that you want.

When you connect a camera, memory card, or other media that contains photos (such as a flash memory drive or CD) to a computer running a 64-bit edition of Windows XP or Windows Vista, the Autoplay dialog does not show options to download the photos with Adobe Bridge CS3 or Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 and earlier. Also, the Adobe Photo Downloader for Photoshop Elements does not automatically appear.

When you connect a digital still camera to a computer that is running Windows Vista, the camera is not recognized. When this problem occurs, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • The AutoPlay window does not appear.
  • The AutoPlay window appears. However, the Import Pictures and Videos option is unavailable.
  • The camera is not listed in the Import from Camera or Scanner dialog box in Windows Vista Photo Gallery.

When you connect a powered-up video camera to a Windows Vista-based computer by using an IEEE 1394 cable or a USB cable, the AutoPlay functionality does not work. For example, you do not see an AutoPlay window that lists the available options to use with the video camera.
