KB974073

January 27th, 2010 · No Comments · 90 views

This article discusses an update for the Microsoft Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) driver, Msahci.sys. This driver was specifically built for the Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) mode of a disk device. The update changes the Msahci.sys driver so that the driver does not call RecordExecutionHistory(), which is called at various times, such as after each command execution. This function copies the AHCI registers into an execution history buffer for debugging. This copy activity can decrease the performance of AMD-based CPU chipsets because Msahci.sys logs entries every time that it is executed.

When you try to restart a Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) 2.0 for Windows Vista system that uses an AMD Barcelona processor and that has the Operating System Capabilities (_OSC) method enabled in the Dell BIOS, the system will continually restart. Additionally, you may receive the following Stop error message on the screen:

STOP: 0×0000007B: (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Notes:

  • The four parameters in the Stop error message vary depending on the computer’s configuration.
  • Not all “Stop 0×0000007B” error messages are caused by this problem.
