System event ID 11 is logged on resume when an I/O operation to a raw USB 2.0 or 3.0 attached hard disk drive in Windows operating systems

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer running a Windows operating system.
  • Attach a USB 2.0 or 3.0 storage device to the system.
  • Let the system go into Hibernate.

In this scenario after you resume Windows from hibernation, a System Event ID 11 may be logged in the Event Viewer:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Date: Date
Time: Time
User: N/A
Computer: Computer_name
Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1
