VSS-based system state backup fails after you uninstall or upgrade a program in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You uninstall or upgrade a program that is installed on the computer.
  • You perform a system state backup operation by using a Volume Shadow Copy Service-based (VSS-based) backup utility.
  • For example, you perform a system state backup by using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM).

In this scenario, the system state backup operation fails.

Note: If the backup utility adds logging or events when this issue occurs, the logging or events indicate that some system state files are missing.

There is a download that resolves this issue. See Hotfixes for details.
