Previously available only through subscriptions to MSDN or Technet, Microsoft today released Windows Vista Service Pack 1 on their public download site. Some are also saying they are now seeing it available through their Windows Update, despite Microsoft having said they wouldn’t push the update through that channel until mid-April. (Note: As described on the Windows Vista Blog, you can pull it through Windows Update, but it isn’t being pushed yet.)
Here are links to the ’standalone’ downloads, which include everything you need to upgrade to SP1:
- Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330)
- Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone for x64-based Systems (KB936330)
If you’re on a slow internet connection, you will want to use the Windows Update option (likely less than 100MB), instead of the standalone installers (32-bit=435MB, 64-bit=727MB).

It’s available through Windows Update. Just updated on my machine. No noticeable difference. What a let down. LOL. It did break my custom themes, though. But that was to be expected.
Update did fail three times before it took on the fourth try. The file size was 66.2 megs on the first three tries. The last one was 69.6 megs. So…maybe the first three analyzed my config. Who knows anymore with MS.

It should speed up a little after Superfetch relearns how you do things (the upgrade wiped out what it had learned about you).

First major difference…
Moving and deleting is a breeze now. I was amazed when Vista moved a 1.3 gig file in about 30 seconds. Wow!
Keep it coming!
