Error message when you try to install an earlier operating system in Windows Preinstallation Environment 2.0: “ has failed with the error code (0×800004005)”

In Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) 2.0, you try to install an earlier operating system, such as Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP. Then, you receive the following error message during the installation:

has failed with the error code (0×800004005).
For more information, please contact the system administrator or helpdesk operator.

This problem occurs if the system has two or more raw disks.

This problem also occurs when you try to deploy an earlier operating system by using Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007.

Note: SCCM 2007 also uses Windows PE 2.0.

There is a download that resolves this issue. See Hotfixes for details. This issue is resolved in SP1.
