Error message when you open a Web page in Windows Internet Explorer 7: “Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close”

You open a Web page in Windows Internet Explorer 7 on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista
  • Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SP2)

When you do this, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Then, Windows Internet Explorer 7 exits unexpectedly.
