Windows Vista benchmark testing

An example of a benchmarking test. This one involves running a window-open, window-close routine at accelerated speed. Nick at the Windows Vista Team Blog says:

You can see that it isn’t representative of real-world user behavior and hence isn’t an accurate gauge of the actual end-user experience. Further, tests like these only measure a very small set of Windows capabilities and so aren’t representative of the user’s overall day-to-day experience of working with Windows and running applications.

Here is a link to the actual article the quote and video came from.

Not a bad read, in full. Has some good points for consideration.

    Followup:

I was wondering just what test they (Microsoft) was using in their comparison…and if maybe the video had been speeded up somehow before posting.

I don’t know about the 2nd question, but I quickly figured out the first.

It was the same test software used by exo performance to benchmark Vista/Vista RC1 in comparison to XP/XP SP3′ish.

So though Microsoft didn’t drop names on who they were targeting, it seems clear now.

exo.performance has responded to Vista Team Blogs post:

    When Microsoft Attacks! - http://exo-blog.blogspot.com/2007/12/when-microsoft-attacks.html

    Also worth reading.

Looks like things are heating up again!

    Cheers!
