Vista SP1 to include faster Defrag

DefragI‘ve seen numerous mentions over the past months of how slow Vista’s defrag program is. Popular site Lifehacker even highlighted a post on how to speed up defrag using third party utilities. Sounds great, but it may not be a good idea, and you may not have to worry about it for long.

One of the problems with third-party tools is that most don’t do all of the things that the built in Defrag does. For instance, the built in version optimizes how shadow copy files are arranged, where third-party tools might accelerate the deletion of shadow copy files. Of course other tools can be faster, they aren’t doing as much! But do you really have to suffer through the slow built in Defrag?

Relief is on the way. In a Technet post, a question was asked about what we can expect for later versions of Defrag. The response was:

We’re also working on improvements to decrease the amount of time it takes to defragment a volume and provide better defragmentation. Because the code base for Defrag is common for Longhorn and Windows Vista, the improvements we make in the server version will be added to Windows Vista SP1.

So there you go. Quicker defrags are on the way, just as soon as SP1 arrives. That may not be until November 29th, as I’m predicting, but some suggestions make it seem like it could be sooner.

There is really only one solution when is come to defragmentation and that Diskeeper 2007.
Its as good as it gets.

Diskeeper was the first defrag utility I used, back in the NT4 days. I believe it was the lite version that was then included in Windows 2000. The current defrag could very well be based on old Diskeeper code! I haven’t used it in some time, but I’m sure you are correct that the current shipping version is likely to be the epitome in disk defragmenting.

Yup, there is nothing to beat Diskeeper when it comes to defrag. The newest technology is superb. Complete automated defrag, that does the job on an intelligent priority basis. Really light on system resources too!

I have used Diskeeper since the NT 3.5 days, back when they would have to modify the kernel just to make it work. Anyway, I used to be a huge Diskeeper fan, but I have found PerfectDisk to be much more effective than Diskeeper. It does a better job at managing the volumes and it doesn’t require you to buy a special expensive version to get improved file layouts. It generally takes Diskeeper multiple passes to defrag at the quality of PerfectDisk. But since PerfectDisk is more effective, it does take a slight bit longer to run, only because it is truly doing more than Diskeeper.

I’ve have used both diskeeper and Perect Disk as well and have found Perfect Disk to be more effective. Perfect disk rearranges the files on the drive and puts the most acessed (such as startup files) on the outer part of the disk platter for faster performance and the less used or more likely to fragment on the inner part. It also defrags the free disc space so that new files written is less likely to be fragmented in the first place so that fragmentation is less likely. (and all this in one defrag pass!) I noticed that diskeeper does a fine job at defragmenting but does not rearrange the files for performance nor does it seem to defrag the free space (all this after multiple passes).

Hi Gentrie I guess you have not used Diskeeper 2007 as you would know it has an optimize feature that moves most used files to the fastest area of a disk. Its not a dumb move to iner or outer of a disk it tests the disks multiple regions to find out where the fastest tranfer is from/too. Take a look I think you’ll be impressed, I was.
These days with its IFAAST and Invisitasking features you don’t even need to think about defraging it does it in realtime without effecting the system.

Diskeeper is by far the best third-party defragging software, but I’ve found a free alternative for those who are less computer savvy called AusLogics Disc Defrag, it has a nice clean interface and is easy to use, though when it comes to internal workings I’m sure it’s nowhere near Diskeeper.

Well, I can now write with the benefit of hindsight. I’ve using Vista SP1, and the defrag is still as slow as ever.
