An article was added to Microsoft’s Knowledge Base yesterday that I found rather curious. Titled Some Toshiba portable computers cannot be upgraded to Windows Vista, it says “These portable computers were originally manufactured and designed to support only Microsoft Windows XP”. The article then goes on to list the specific models:
- Satellite R15 series
- Satellite L25 series
- Satellite L2 series
- Satellite M45 series
- Satellite M55 series
- Satellite M65 series
- Satellite A70 series
- Satellite A75 series
- Satellite M30X series
- Satellite M35X series
- Satellite P35 series
- Portege - M200 series Tablet PC
- Tecra M2 series
Specifically designed for XP only? How do you do that? I looked at the specs for a few of these, and they seemed within reason to run Vista on. Enough RAM, enough processor, enough Hard drive. I noticed that one that I looked at listed a video card that had DirectX 8.1 optimized drivers, where ‘Vista Capable’ requires at least DirectX 9. Is that one thing the deal breaker? Can’t the driver just be updated? I’m curious to know if anyone has tried installing Vista on one of these models, and if so, what the result was. Let us know in the comments!

Joe,
My wife owns a Toshiba Satellite L25-S1195. It is currently running Vista Ultimate with no problems at all. It defaulted to Aero on the first boot, and she uses the Dream Scene for her background. This article really makes no sense to me.

Exactly what I suspected! If anyone has an explanation for why Microsoft released this article, I’d be interested to hear it. Could it be a licensing issue? From what Eric said, it doesn’t appear that it’s a hardware issue.

I am working on an M45 right now and sure enough I am having issues installing Vista. I guess there is no fix. I better just give up now. This is going to piss my client off as I recommended he buy Vista. Damn. This is going to be upsetting!

I’m running Vista Business on my Toshiba M65-s9092 with very few issues. I have the maximum hardware stats this machine is capable of (2ghz proc, 100gb hdd, 2gb ram). I’ve blue-screened it once since I installed it last night. I was trying to find a vista compatible version of the touchpad driver application. Vista suprisingly autorolled-back and booted into windows while blocking the execution of the incompatible version. So I finally found the ALPS program on the A8 vista load and used it instead and wah-la! My touchpad scrolls stablely in vista. The entire machne is stable
The best thing is that this operating system is really fast. If your a power user then this is definitely the perfect setup.

I kinda figured drivers should be the only setback, and most of the hardware is off the shelf stuff that will probably have drivers in Vista, or released from the OEM. Glad to hear you got yours working!

I cheated
I work for a toshiba warranty repair facility…so I can actually get the drivers I need
hehe!
Good luck to you guys trying to do this without the inside drivers availability
The ALPS app for touchpad control was a pain even for me to find.

Installed Vista on satellite A70 and ATI SMBUS driver problem. ATI aka AMD does not support this chipset any longer.

YOU CHEAP BASTARD! You paid what? 400 bucks for that POS A-70! Then you put a 300 dollar OS on it?!?! What sense does that make?! You are truly a glutton for electronic punishment and the electric gods have smitten you! Upgrade your hardware and then consider an OS upgrade! How dare you even clutter discussion boards with banter of such a cheap unit?! I deal with customers like you on a daily basis, so this is my chance to release my rage on your kind (digital posers).. haha… and you get the brunt of it LoL! Why not try to run Vista on a 386 pentium 1? It would probably perform better. Btw… if you did pay more than 400 for your A70, then you got ripped off cause thats what they go for these days.

A bit harsh 1337. Perhaps he already owned it. Maybe a second or third machine that he tried to install an upgrade version of Home Basic ($99). I know what it’s like to get frustrated at users, but let’s try to keep things positive here.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M65-S09 running Vista Ultimate. The only problem I have is that I can’t find the PCI Flash memory driver update. My Question is, “Is there a driver update for this?”

I am running vista SMB on an M-65-S9092…and can tell you that they haven’t made that driver yet. However, if you should happen to find the drivers for the media buttons across the top or a vista compatible piece of software to operate them please let me know. I’ve been searching everywhere for it.
Thanks,

Im running vista on an A70.
There is no vista specific video or smbus drivers, but te xp versions do the job almost fine.
Power management is poor (is not a native toshiba bios) and video has no 3d accel (no aero, but resolutions and video are ok).
It works fine, the article is just lobby to justify amd’s abandon on Radeon IGP drivers.

I have a Toshiba A-70 and a R-15… I was never brave enough to put Vista on the A-70, but have been using it on the R-15 without problems except for external video and shutdowns…
The external display either does not work at all, or locks up the PC shortly after being detected…
I can never just do a shutdown (unless I am in safe mode). Restarts and Hibernation work great, but Shutdowns just hang the notebook…
I am pretty sure both problems are caused by the Intel 82852/82855 Video driver…

i have a satellite m65 s9092 and everything on vista ultimate works fine (except aero type stuff), but my native display resolution only gives me 2 options. They are both stretched too W I D E.
Does anyone have a workaround that can make my screen normal and not stretched?
ati radeon mobility x600 graphics card will never be supported in vista.
thanks! adam

Sorry… I didn’t understand the spam thing
For those who have a Toshiba Satellite M45-S265:
1. Install Vista
2. Wait until 1st reboot (obviously it will get halted with no disk activity for a long time)
3. Reboot again, Press F8 and select Safe Mode
Most probably, while loading drivers, the computer with be stuck at crcdisk.sys
Reason:
Vista is trying to load drivers which don’t work in Vista
Failing drivers may be:
PCMCIA, 1394 (firewire, Texas Instruments)
(Did you ever use them? I never did)
Solution:
4. Reboot and load from your bootable Windows Vista CD and choose to restore.
Tnen choose ‘other options’ and go to console.
Then do this:
C:
cd \windows
del *pcmcia*.* /s/p
del *1394*.* /s/p
This will get rid of everything related to pcmcia and 1394
including drivers, INF files …..
5. Restart and enjoy!!!
Notes:
At first, I only did: del *pcmcia*.* /s/p but Vista didn’t work.
I am not sure what will happen if next time I reinstall Vista
and only do: del *1394*.* /s/p
This method may work for other models of Toshiba or even other brands of Desktop/Noteboos

I have a m45-s359 laptop. I installed a Vista Ultimate, and i have a little problem as peejay. I cannot change display light intensity. Also as video card has internal memory i cannot change the memory manually. I don’t know how to use fn key too!!
I found this useful site now, check it:

I have a m55, just installed vista ultimate, and i have to say that this is a pretty nice OS. found the driver for the mouse, if your looking and its a alps pointing device, just search for that which vista as part of the search queue. I just found the driver for the flash memory, it was one for another model, but it seems to work pretty well on mine. The only thing i’m still looking for is the driver for the media buttons. If anyone found a working driver, please leave a post

I own an A70, installed Vista ultimate. Works fine except no upgrade support for the ATI Video. Notice the video is not as clear. Will be putting XP back on and leaving Vista for my desktop.

I have a Toshiba Satellite S4014 with Vista Bussiness. Media buttons and contrast adjustement is no longer working. I downloaded all drivers available from Toshiba web site. Is there something I am missing? It would be nice to change the brightness of my monitor to save battery.

Ok… here’s an update…
go to:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com
Click on drivers and downloads, should be on the right side of the page (under tech support).
Click on ‘portables’, choose the machine ‘family’, then choose the ‘model’. If your model is not listed, click the link just below the model window and refresh.
This listing is all of the manufacturer’s drivers for your laptop.
———————————————————
A Note on BIOS Upgrades/Updates:
If you should choose to update your BIOS, you need to return your current BIOS to default settings before continuing with the update. I usually home out the BIOS, reboot, run upgrade from inside of windows, in some cases it may be necessary to use a bootable media for this procedure. Also, DO NOT attempt this procedure on battery power alone. You can brick the entire thing.
———————————————————–
Explanation of the article: These machines were originally released specifically for XP, that’s true, because originally these machines shipped from manufacturers with the older BIOS (in most cases), however, most of those (if not all) have been updated and re-released.
———————————————————
So if you want to run Vista, then please update your BIOS before you do it. Know that a lot of drivers do not exist for Vista for some hardware components in some of these models, so don’t be surprised if something isn’t up to date in your device manager. I’m missing 3 drivers myself because i chose to run an OS that my laptop manufacturer does not make drivers for (Ultimate x64-bit). Sometimes this is a big deal and other times it’s not, it varies from machine to machine. In my case, I lost the functionality of the media buttons built into my strip cover. It was an acceptable sacrifice, so no biggie. If you are missing “base drivers”, don’t expect to have long battery life.
So final note: Do some research and figure out what drivers are available before making the upgrade.
————————————————————
(just a quick reminder, your AC adapters are only under warranty for the first year of coverage on your warranties, so be gentle with them. Despite popular opinion, just because they are brick like does not mean dropping them does no damage. )
———————————————————-
Hope this helps to clear some of the confusion.

I installed vista ultimate on my girlfriends toshiba satellite m45 S331 laptop. The major issue is that there are no vista sound drivers for the onboard sound card, which means no sound. I’ve combed the forums for a solution, but I think we’ll have to revert back to xp.

Ray,
csd.toshiba.com
download the FN key utility
configure the compatibility mode for xp sp2 and ‘run as administrator’ to install
that should fix it.
