ITsVISTA Tip 49: How to Enable Vista’s DreamScene

TipsSo you told Windows Update to download DreamScene. It installed, you rebooted, where is it? If you type dreamscene in your search bar it doesn’t list a program to run. So what the heck do you have do to make your desktop move around? This post made me remember how confused I was at first as well. Here’s how to make your desktop a little more active (Note: You can only get DreamScene on the Ultimate version of Vista).

  1. Right-click on your desktop and choose Personalize
    Personalize
  2. In the Personalize window, choose Desktop Background
    Desktop Background
  3. In the Desktop Background window, click on the Location drop down menu and choose Windows DreamScene Content
    Windows DreamScene Content
  4. You’ll be shown the available content from your ‘DreamScene Content’ folder. If you only have one item, you should run Windows Update and choose the optional Windows DreamScene Content Pack to get another four movies (note one of mine has a thumbnail problem, which many others experienced as well). Click on the thumbnail of choice and you should immediately see the movie running on your desktop!
    Pick a Movie

    DreamScene on Your Desktop

  5. You can then use the controls at the bottom of the Desktop Background window to change how the movie fits on your desktop, and what color to display if it doesn’t cover the entire desktop.
    Fit and Finish

Did you uninstall it, or just delete the files? If you uninstalled it, I would think going into ‘Control Panel’ to ‘Programs’, then ‘Programs and Features’, and finally ‘Turn Windows Features on or off’. Scroll down to ‘Windows Ultimate Extras’ and check the box for ‘Windows DreamScene Preview’. Let me know if this works!

I was just wondering, is there a way to actually disable the welcome screen - not the welcome centre the welcome screen.. so that when you lock your computer the desktop wallpaper will show or the dreamscene video that you have applied, instead of the default vista screen?

Nope, it’s not a screensaver. Maybe it could be though someday. I think it would be great if they would include that as a feature; so when your screensaver comes on (or you lock your PC), all your programs fade out, but the video remains as your screensaver/lock screen.

That would be a nice option!

ok I ended up reinstalling Vista Ultimate. I got the dreamscenes update BUT now it keeps saying it needs to have Aero theme installed and I keep choosing Aero from the list but dreamscenes still won’t work. I have 1 gb of ram and a 128 mb video card. Any ideas???

Is Aero working for anything else (clear title bars, etc)?
If not, go to your manufacturer’s web site and get the latest video drivers.
It should work after that, especially if it worked before you reinstalled Vista.
