The Fax service quite simply ‘enables faxing from your computer’. Though this would seem to be most useful for home users (businesses tend to have dedicated fax machines), it is not available in Vista Home Basic or Home Premium. The service enables both transmitting and receiving, as well as routing and archiving. If you search this site for fax you’ll find no fewer than a dozen KB-Links related to faxing in Vista, so at it’s best it has problems. Because the default setting is ‘manual’, there is little point to disabling this service.

First of all, when starting using windows vista, the fax is running well, after automatic updating vista, the fax can not run. I tried to solve this problem, but till now can not find the solution. What’s wrong with the updating? What can I do to make this fax function running again.

I have the same problem. It used to be problem free, now it can’t fax even when I tried changing modem. It shows local fax has been disconnected even when printer ‘fax’ is online. RPC is always unavailable.

This one really bugs me.
I used the XP Fax service a lot. ( No one ignores a fax or sends automated replies that ignore the issue!)
When I got my shiny new Vista Home machine – No fax. But it’s as obvious to me as is is to you, though sadly not the idiots in Microsoft, that this service is only of use to home users, who don’t usually have fax machines of their own!!
