In addition to the bug fixes released today, if you’re running the Ultimate edition of Vista you’ll see another item in your Windows Update list. Windows DreamScene Content Pack is an optional item in Windows Update that installs four MPG movies for use as desktop videos in DreamScene. With the one that came with the original DreamScene installation, this now gives you five animated desktops to choose from (from Microsoft).
vid8897.mpg
A ten second, 10MB video of a flower with a bee flying away from it. This one loops well, but a bee magically fades in on the flower every loop.

vid8898.mpg
An eight second, 8MB video of a lamp being reflected in a pool of water while raindrops fall. This one loops well, I wasn’t distracted, and couldn’t really tell at what point it looped.

vid8899.mpg
A twelve second, 21MB video of water flowing down a mossy brook. A good job with the loop, if you focus on the leaves in the foreground you’ll notice a blend at one point, but it’s not distracting.

vid9899.mpg
A fourteen second, 14MB video of an abstract orange and black moving blob, kind of like fire without any pointy edges. This one loops perfectly, no noticable jump.

The video clips are stored in your C:\windows\web folder, and can also be viewed with a normal video player like Microsoft’s Media Player.

This is a nice little feature I didn’t know about. I really like the moving default desktop bg. Problem is, the res of the videos is really low so on a high res screen it looks pretty fuzzy.

Dreamscene is rather nice. I wish it came with more than the basic 5 mpgs.
Especially when at a Microsoft seminar today, they were running a Vista machine with about 20 installed. Including a spectacular Vernal Falls clip. Why those mpgs weren’t included for Ultimate users, I do not know…

Maybe they will release more through Ultimate extras. We can only hope!
