Just recently I got a laugh out of a post called “But I Don’t Want to be a Flower!“, a funny title that I associated with Seinfeld. The post actually has a nice, quick tip on how to change that ‘flower’ icon you get on your Vista login screen and in your ‘Start’ menu. Here’s how I changed my icon, not just to one of the stock icons, but to me!
- That post was right, I don’t want to be a flower! Open your ‘Start’ menu and click on the evil flower icon
- In the User Accounts window, click Change your picture
- Now you could simply pick one of the stock icons and then click Change Picture. Do I want to be a kitty? NO! I want to be me! So, click on the Browse for more pictures… link.
- Browse for a picture you’d like to use. I happened to have one of me in my Pictures folder that I’ll use. Click on the picture and then click Open
- That’s it! Look in your ‘Start’ menu and you’ll see the new picture. Logout or restart and you’ll see it on your login screen as well.

i think if anyone that has a pc doesnt know how too use a basic computer skill , or alter something , minimal as that shouldn’t even have a pc , even a beginner will have some commonsence into changing a trivial aspect as that.
id suggest , using resource hacker and altering some of the *.dll’s in the sytem file directory ,
too experiment , try copying the files you would alter first , then if something went wrong, you could just copy the file back
suggesting the file “imageres.dll”
as a starter file

There are many people in the world that don’t want to invest hours/days/years learning every aspect of their computer. They just want it to work, and occasionally, work the way they want. This is perfectly OK, as it keeps me employed, and keeps all of them working on things I don’t want to have to invest hours/days/years learning about.

Your picture of the “evil flower” sits entirely inside the start menu;whereas mine overlapped the top edge.Did you notice the past tense?
I attempted a picture change by Start>Control Panel>User Accounts and Family Safety>Change your Account Picture. My first look revealed 2 copies of the “flower”; and I was curious; and still am,why? I made my choice, clicked Change Picture and was immediately shown the change on the User Accounts page. So far so good…until I went back to the Start Menu only to find my owner picture gone from the Start Menu along with the Icons that would only highlight when mouse pointer scanned over them or they were selected.I believe there were 4 of them.
In my quest for a cure,I of course had to go back to where I started…Change Your Picture in User Accounts, only to find the second copy of the “Flower” gone! And I have not seen it since. One thing I did not do that you did was click on the Start Menu Picture before going into User Accounts and cannot figure why that picture click is necessary. As my name suggests,I can use and be grateful for all and any help you’ll give. Thanks in advance. joeblowignorant

Perhaps I’m a bit impatient, but I have not heard a thing, in over a week, about my Post concerning my Vista start menu picture(owner).I was hoping Joe could tell me about that initial click on the start menu picture BEFORE going to “Change your picture” in “User Accounts”in step #1 of tip #44.Granted;it is probably something I have done or not done, but I would like to know the relevancy of that first click!I would much appreciate a reply from Joe,or anyone else that may be able to enlighten me.Thank you.

Sorry for the delay. It looks like your method gets you to the same place as mine, but simply clicking on the picture in the Start menu is a little quicker. The method you use to get there shouldn’t have any relevance on how if functions. I tried it the way you described and it worked the same way as in the tip. I’ve gone back to the Start menu and the picture is appearing fine, so it’s hard to say why yours isn’t. So you’re saying you now have no picture at all in the start menu, and you can’t add one?

To Joe from joeblowignorant; thank you for your prompt reply.I have given myself an appropiate nickname!I didn’t realize that by clicking the start menu picture one would be taken to “User Accounts”.Which makes me ask..? How and where did you learn a move like that? I have a couple more questions if you don’t mind?On your photo of the User Accounts>User Accounts.I can’t seem to get that specific reading.Mine says User Accounts and Family Safety>User Accounts, but it comes out the same.Do you have the “Ultimate”? It seems like no big thing,I know, but I am curious.Do you know of those icons I spoke of in my first Post? I didn’t have them long enough to say with 100% certainty that they were even there! When I would drag my pointer over the names of the 4 program icons that sit directly below the Owner button,an icon would light up.The trophy icon(light green)is the most vivid.I really appreciate the time you’ve spent so far and I look forward to a reply.Thank you! jbi

It should appear automatically. What do you see instead of the picture you chose?

The only way I found of fixing it with out reinstalling the vista, was to create another User Account, and move all you files over, then delete the one that is having trouble. Not the best fix.
I found that setting AppData to hidden causes this for me.

I checked my AppData folder and lo and behold it was hidden. I checked off hidden, let it unhide all of the files, folders etc, then changed the picture and it stayed. Thank you Carl!

Thats ok, im hoping that the SP1 will fix this error as the AppData file should be hidden!!!
Anyway, at least we dont have to look at the orange flower all the time

Nice tip - yes, c0_80, a basic tip, but many people have day jobs and have to focus on doing their work, not delving into every option available. Keep up the good work on the English classes, btw.
Thanks, Joe

Thanks for the evil flower remedy. I’ve been fighting a related problem for a couple of days with only deeper problems as a result. Nice to have a step in the right direction.

What’s with the halo effect on the picture that is chosen? Just like in the jpfieber pic above - the tope half is lit. It also does this to pictures that I have for my contacts in Outlook Express. It distorts the image; can I get rid of it?

Not that I’m aware of, it appears to be Microsoft’s way of making it look ’shiny’ and ‘cool’, like the rest of Vista.

I don’t want to see any picture on my start menu - pretty or not.
Does anyone know how to remove the picture and its frame completely?
Cheers

I have a better fix for the orange flower showing as a profile pic.
Show all hidden files, and in USER(Your name)\ right click APPS, then properties. Untick hidden. Apply.
Then right click APPS again, then properties, tick hide, and then select Only this folder.
Then hide all hidden files again. Done!!

Can you change the size of your user photo? Like you can with all other files and folders. Make it a bit bigger.
