In my last tip, I showed you how to use Shadow Copy to restore an older version of a file. This won’t work for you if your data is on a different disk than the one Vista is installed on since System Restore isn’t enabled on additional disks by default, and Shadow Copy relies on System Restore.
Here’s how to enable System Restore on other disks you may be using:
- In the Start Menu, right-click on Computer and choose Properties from the menu. You can also type
systemin the search box and choose System from the available applications it finds (as well as many other methods to get to the System window).
- Click on System Protection on the left side of the System window. You’ll need to approve the UAC prompt if you have it enabled.
- In the System Properties window, check the additional disks you want to have System Restore create automatic restore points on.
- Click OK and you’re done! The next System Restore will include the selected disk. You can also create an immediate restore point by clicking the Create button.

Hard to say. I would try booting into ‘Safe Mode’ (press F8 just before Vista starts loading) and try it from there. This could help if some application or service you have running is somehow stopping the restore.

Is this the same drive you installed from? Seems strange it wouldn’t show up. I would check to see if it’s listed in the disk manager (search for ‘computer management’, then click ‘disk management’). Is it listed there? If not, then it’s probably driver related, check ‘Device Manager’ within the Computer Management window to see if it is listed under ‘DVD/CD-ROM Drives’, or if there are any items that are listed as ‘unknown’.
