I’ve seen mention that this update can cause the slider bar not to work in Media Player. Uninstalling the update seems to bring the slider bar back.

I tried to install the latest version 11 from the \microsoft website, but that mentioned for XP. When I nevertheless tried to install it I got the message there is a newer version installed on your machine. Is that the proof that kb929399 is not intended for my computer?
The remaining question then is how do I get rid of this update

I’m having the same issues with KB929399 Media Format Update. It came in my Tuesday Patch updates with all the new security stuff, and now it won’t go away, despite indicating that it s successfully installed after each attempt. I’m running XP sp2 2002 edition. About 5 minutes after I’ve completed the install, the Windows Update icon is back in the toolbar with the same #$%^ing update. Any news on your problem Gerard?

You might try installing the ’standalone’ version, available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929399
If you’re running any Roxio software, you might also want to try their update at http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/Creator/000131CR (I’ve seen some say these problems were related).
