Expect an Update to Stop Vista ‘Timer/2099 Crack’ Soon

TimerJust a couple weeks ago a ‘fix’ to stop the Frankenbuild activation hack was released. A few hours ago ‘alexkoc’ on the Windows Genuine Advantage blog acknowledged that there is a new Vista activation hack in the wild. It won’t be long until another update is released, and a new round of messages on how to uninstall it floods the web.

Known as the ‘timer crack’ or ‘2099 crack’ this hack basically resets the pre-activation grace period to be in effect through 2099. Implementing this hack requires the user to implement a 23-step process that involves modifying/replacing kernel level files, making manual registry edits and other serious changes that could have destabilizing consequences. Our team is actively reviewing the reports of this workaround now, and I expect we’ll take corrective action soon.

Um, not that I would know, but it actually takes only 7 steps, one of which is installing Vista. “Destabilizing” for whom, I wonder? And who is running automatic updates anyway?

[...] The Security Bulletins for January 9, 2007 were just released. Among the four hotfixes, three are critical, and one is important. Three are for Office, and one is for Windows/Internet Explorer. None effect Windows Vista. This means that Windows MessageBox is still a vulnerability, and the Timer/2099 Crack will still work. [...]

[...] a patch for the Windows MessageBox exploit, so Vista should get it. Might another be for the Vista 'Timer/2099 Crack'? I wouldn't consider it critical, but Microsoft probably does. They don't specifically [...]
