ITsVISTA Tip 8: The Vista Power Button Revisited

TipsMy first tip was how to change the behavior of the power button. The default is to Sleep, but I prefer to actually Shut Down. It’s only seven tips later, and I’ve already got a different way to do this, mostly because it’s a few steps quicker.

  1. Open the Start Menu and click on Control Panel
  2. Click on System Maintenance
  3. Notice under Power Options there is a link directly to Change what the power buttons do. Click on it.
  4. You get the option for When I press the power button:, which has a drop-down containing Do nothing, Sleep, Hibernate and Shut Down. I, of course, choose Shut Down.
  5. Then, just click Save Changes, close the open windows, and your finished!

I have yet to find a way to change the default action of the power button to “restart.” I never shut down, but I often restart as I dual boot between Vista and XP.

Good point. They have restart as an option in the Start Menu ‘Shut Down’ menu, but not as a pickable option in the configuration of the Power Button. A quick Google didn’t turn up anyone with knowledge of a hidden registry setting.

Great tip. Have you found any way to make Vista prompt to confirm shutdown, rather than just “doing it”?

Nope. The closest I’ve seen is to click on the taskbar, then press ALT+F4, which will open the traditional shutdown menu.

Make a shortcut with “shutdown -r -t 0″ and place it on your quickstart-bar (0 is zero and without “)
“-s” shuts down and “-l” logs off.
I use also a shortcut to hibernate:
    “%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Hibernate”
    Works perfect… I use it since 1900 ;-)
