ITsVISTA Tip 5: Autologin on Vista

TipsI‘m used to having my home computer automatically login when I start it since I’m the only user. In Windows XP I used TweakUI to set this, but how do I do it in Vista? A little searching turned up this tip from Spooky on the MSFN.org forums:

  1. Go to the Start Menu, type netplwiz in the search box, and press Enter
  2. If you have UAC active (which you should), you’ll need to give permission for the program to start.
  3. The User Accounts window will open. Notice the option Users must enter a name and password to use this computer, uncheck the box and click OK.
  4. You will be prompted for the login name and password of the user that you want automatically logged in. Enter the information for a user account that already exists and click OK.

That’s it! A couple things to keep in mind:

  • You should always have a password assigned, even if you are automatically logging in, to help prevent remote access to your machine
  • If your machine is physically accessible to others, setting your machine to automatically login will allow them the same access that you have, not recommended for work!

Good point Badmaster, I’m still used to the pre-Windows XP days. Apparently you can no longer connect to Windows remotely using an account with no password.

    How can I UNDO this?
I unchecked the box… result… there’s no more administrator on the PC. I only can logon as GUEST….
I can’t use UAC (the OK-box cannot be clicked to agree with a ‘changing’ or so)….

@Eddy: It sounds like your accounts are definitely messed up. Normally the Guest account, as well as the Administrator account, are disabled. What happens if you go to ‘Shutdown’ and choose ‘Switch User’? Do you see other users listed besides Guest?

Hi, thanks for willing helping me!
I tried, but I only see my name. I use my existing PW and can go further… but still without admin. rights.
When I used NETPLWIZ, I think there has going something wrong cause I don’t remember me the second screen as seen above by point 4.. Or I juste entered there or so…
I’m happy that there is a place where others will help me! I don’t won’t to have to reïnstall Vista…. and loose all my installed progs.
I have 165Gb on my C: (the rest -> data, most pictures, music and video are on other drives and partitions).
So.. please… try to help me!
    Nice Belgian greetings,
    Eddy
PS: sorry for my ‘bad’ English, but I’m Dutch-speaking, so it’s not so easy to make me ‘clear’ in English. Thanks for your understanding.
